National Lottery AWARDS FOR ALL - Featured in the September Newsletter:

Compton Players have been awarded a grant of nearly £9,300 from the National Lottery Awards for All to The application for the grant was for specific items to support the Diamond Jubilee production of Macbeth by William Shakespeare but the overall implications will benefit future productions for many years to come. The grant will be spent on new lights and lighting equipment; a larger storage container for set materials; and on the construction and hire of costumes, sets and props and advertising specifically to support the forthcoming production of Macbeth.

Our last productions

The Autumn 2007 production was Macbeth; the dark medieval tale, driven by prophecies, with ambition, betrayal, bloody murder and witchcraft.

Our rehearsed reading of The Man from Toronto took place on September 8th. Directed/produced brilliantly by Mary.  Part of our Jubilee celebrations, The Man from Toronto was the first play ever performed by the Compton Players after their formation in 1947.

Our spring production was Shakers Re-Stirred. Every town has its ‘Shakers’, the oh-so trendy cocktail bar where everyone wants to be seen: from the check-out girls to the chinless wonders, from the yuppies to the local lads. We are given a wickedly funny glimpse of this world by the four long-suffering waitresses, offering a fascinating view of the reality that lurks behind the plastic palms and Pina Coladas in this revised version of the ever-popular play. You can read the Newbury Weekly News review here.

Our 2006 autumn production was Nobody's Perfect by Simon Williams, from 15th to 18th November. More information here. The review from the Newbury Weekly News, by Trevor Dobson, is here ("highly enjoyable production ... Nick Roberts handled his huge role impressively ... Mary Warrington gave us a well drawn character who we could really warm to ... H Connolly brought out all the incorrigible but charming elements of this character ... Naomi Read as Dee-Dee - this was an excellent, natural and well-acted performance ... another success for Compton Players).

About Compton Players

Compton Players have been producing plays every year since 1947. We always welcome new members, and we were delighted to include three new members in our last production. We are looking not only for people who want to act, but also those who can construct scenery, or would like to learn how, those who can make or sew costumes, those with a knowledge of electrics and/or electronics, and those who would like to help with publicity, box-office and front of house.

We normally rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Coronation Hall, Compton (about 10 miles North of Newbury) and for most productions there are twelve weeks of rehearsals. It doesn't matter if you've had any previous experience or not.

Our members come from all over the place - from Basingstoke in the South to Grove in the North - so there's probably someone near you.

Contact Compton Players

Our chairman is Helen Saxton - contact her by email.

The History File

Eric Saxton has dug out his huge collection of archive material dating back to 1947. Over the next few months (years?), I'll try to scan this and make it available on this site.
